So, what’s going on at Beer Bacon Music, anyway?

There truly will be something for everyone — from food and drink to live music and demonstrations — not to mention the largest Homebrew Competition in the world: the Brewer’s $6K!

Ok, I am there. Then what?

Once you park your car at one of the fairground’s adjacent parking lots, you’ll enter the festival through Gate 1 or Gate 2 off East Patrick Street. When you enter the festival please have your printed ticket, or be ready with your ticket pulled up on your mobile device. You will need to provide your ID so that you can receive a wristband, and a tasting glass for your beer samples. (Wristbands will not be issued to those under 21, or those who purchased a designated driver ticket). From there you will be provided with a map of the event (where you can find different breweries, vendors, bacon, and bands), and a schedule of the weekend’s events (outlining, the Brewer’s $6K Homebrew Competition winner announcements and band schedule).

PENNY SAMPLES FOR CHARITY: Please raid your piggy banks...all beer samples will cost ONE PENNY. All proceeds from the penny samples will be donated to Cocktails for a Cause Maryland, Inc.

Here’s an overview of the 2-day festival line-up.   Obviously there will be beer, bacon and music.

In addition to that, you can expect to see:

  • The Brewer’s $6K Homebrew Competition & Awards, with live judging to find out right in front of you WHO will win and WHY
  • Chance to meet staff from EVERY brewery who’s beer will be served. This is a great chance to learn and talk about beer!
  • Live demonstrations of the latest and greatest homebrew equipment
  • 10+ Food Trucks serving delicious cuisine and trendy treats
  • Á la carte gourmet and specialty bacon dishes
  • Á la carte wine
  • Outdoor patio featuring cigar and beer pairings from Guy and Lady Barrel and Goose Island

Friday

The Brewer's $6K Homebrew Competition Check-In

Check-In for the Brewer’s $6K Homeberw Competition will be from 3-5pm at the Frederick Fairgrounds. Competitors are required to check in (ID required), and drop off 2 bottles of their homebrew entry. These bottles will be used for the live judging events during the festival on Saturday and Sunday.

The Brewer's $6K VIP Welcome Party — Invitation Only (general public not admitted)

By registering for The Brewer’s $6K Homebrew Competition, you are invited to the exclusive VIP Welcome Party on Friday evening, May 16, 2014 from 5-7pm, on Carroll Creek in Downtown Frederick, MD. The VIP Welcome Party will feature an exclusive beer share with other competitors, judges, and brewery reps. The VIP Welcome Party will be followed by a Downtown Frederick Bar Crawl.

 

Saturday

11:30 am — Beer Bacon Music, Day 1: Gates Open

When you enter the festival please have your printed ticket, or be ready with your ticket pulled up on your mobile device. You will need to provide your ID so that you can receive a wristband, and a tasting glass for your beer samples. (Wristbands will not be issued to those under 21, or those who purchased a designated driver ticket).

12:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: Select Botanicals’ Ale, Light/Blonde (Kolsch, Cream Ale)
  • First Place Style Prize: The winner of the Light/Blond Ale category will receive a year supply of some of the most exclusive/experimental hops that were not previously available to homebrewers. Select Botanicals will send a sample of our branded varieties or experimental once a month for a year. This will include Citra®, Simcoe®, Mosaic®, Equinox™, Ahtanum™, Palisade®, as well as 6 experimental samples that are as of today available to zero home brewers in the world. Sample sizes will be enough for a full single hop 10 gallon batch, or to break up. I will include descriptions of the hops with the samples.
  • Second Place Style Prize: Will receive some Swag and other goodies from Select Botanicals.
12:00 pm — Adrienne Smith (soul rock)

Frederick musician Adrienne Smith will bring her soul-rock to Beer Bacon Music for an afternoon of original music as well as covers. Her influences include all classic blues artists as well as Adele and Odetta.

1:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: Starr Hill Brewery’s Ale, Pale (Pale Ale, APA, IPA, Double/Imperial IPA)
  • First Place Style Prize: VIP Tour of the brewery and 1-on-1 tasting with Brewmaster and Founder, Mark Thompson. Winner and a guest will receive a free night stay in beautiful downtown Charlottesville with passes to see a show at the historic Jefferson Theatre.
  • Second Place Style Prize: $100 Voucher to Winner’s choice of their favorite Home Brewing supplies store.
  • **JUST ANNOUNCED** In addition to all other prizes, the first place winner of the “Ale, Pale” category will also receive 3 pounds of organic Maryland grown Cascade hops from Organarchy hops. Organarchy Hops are the first recognized organically-grown Maryland hops, and they are proud to support the homebrew contestants at Beer Bacon Music’s Brewer’s $6K. 1:00 pm — The Up County Band (country/rock)

The Up County Band is a country/rock band from the Baltimore area. They are an up beat, in your face, loud and proud country act … This ain’t ya Daddys country! They write all of their own original music, and perform a wide variety of covers, new and old. Thinking outside the box, while staying true to your roots is important to them, so that they are able to create a diverse collection of new unique country music. Expect to see a fast paced, loud, honky tonk style show.

2:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: Resignation Brewery’s Ale, Amber (Bitter, Amber Ale, Red Ale, Alt)

First Place Style Prize: $500

2:00 pm — Rockaway Beach Boys (Ramones tribute band)

The Rockaway Beach Boys are a collaborative, compiled of Baltimore musicians who owe a great deal to the Ramones. To pay tribute, the finest Ramones tunes are played at break-neck tempo and sung in three-part harmony.

3:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Homebrew Competition Live Judging: 2nd Place “Celebrity Pick” Best Beer Award

The second place winners from each beer style category will go on to compete for the “Celebrity Pick” Best Beer Award judged by Roche from DC 101, Joe Michaels from Resignation Brewery and The Chive, and two other celebrity judges. This 2nd Place “Celebrity Pick” Best Beer Award is $1,000!

3:00 pm — Black Falls (rock fusion)

Black Falls is a Baltimore region quartet pumping out a high energy fusion of Roots Rock, Driving and Funky Blues and Classic Rock. Although our sound is hard to define, it embodies a groove and attitude that moves your soul and your feet.

4:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: Elysian Brewery’s Ale, Porter/Stout
  • First Place Style Prize: Elysian Brewing Company Dream Vacation – 2 night stay at a Seattle, WA hotel; lunch or dinner (and beers) at one of the Elysian Pubs; and the opportunity to brew for a day with one of Elysian’s brewers! (must be scheduled in advance with Elysian)
  • Second Place Style Prize: Elysian gift basket including a variety of Elysian beers, logo glasses and wearables.
4:00 pm — Skribe (garage folk)
This soulful garage folk duo cranks out a hard-edged blues sound that both pumps life into the old genre & blazes a new trail. Thanks for tuning into craft brewed independent music.

12:00 pm — Tommy McGee (blues, funk, soul, and southern rock fusion)

Tommy McGee is a Singer/Songwriter and multi instrumentalist who mainly plays Guitar. He has fronted such bands as the Baby PLEASE!, and the Glen Burnie Rhythm Section in addition to many others over his career, as well being a solo performer. Tommy McGee’s style is a sum of many parts including Blues, Funk, Soul, and Southern Rock, with his own flair included, it is far from basic.

1:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: Devils Backbone’s Ale, Belgian Style
  • First Place Style Prize: Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company Vacation package, includes a 1 Night stay at Horseshoe Mountain Lodge in beautiful Roseland, VA (sleeps 8), and a $50 gift card for Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub in Roseland, VA

1:00 pm — Kwesi K (American folk)

Folk music is what the people sing. Big Mamma Thornton brought us Rock n Roll. Sam Cooke helped define soul. The storytelling of Grandmaster Flash helped lay the foundation of Hip Hop. These are all genres that have their roots in American Folk Music. Like the great artists before him, Kwesi K continues the legacy of Folk Music. The Alaskan-Ghanaian-Ohioian songwriter uses contemporary stylings that pull from the diasporas of American heritage. Soulful and simple, Kwesi K draws his listeners in with colorful story lines and a melodic fervor. Kwesi is a true American folk musician celebrating the history of this county’s ancestors and their music.

2:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: DuClaw‘s Specialty Brew (Fruit Beer, Spiced Beer, Sour)
  • First Place Style Prize: DuClaw Brewing Company is treating the winner to a day of brewing at DuClaw Brewing Company with Brewmaster Jim Wagner to brew THE WINNING SPECIALTY BEER! The winning brewer and 10 of his/her closest friends will return to DuClaw Brewing Company a few weeks later for a tasting party featuring his/her brew and a guided tour. As an added bonus, if the winning brewer lives in a DuClaw Brewing Company distribution territory, we’ll take over the taps at one of the local bars for a night and launch their winning brew in style, making the winner a homebrewing superstar AND a hometown hero!
  • Second Place Style Prize: $100 gift card to DuClaw restaurants
2:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: Sierra Nevada‘s Lager, Pale/Dark/Amber (Pale, Oktoberfest, Bock, Dunkel)
  • First Place Style Prize: Tickets for 2 to the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across America event in Philadelphia, August 2, 2014 (hotel included). This tour will be one of the feature beer events in the US this year.  In a cross country band of brewer’s type tour, these beer festivals will feature a host of local brewers unique to the area of each festival plus the 12 collaboration brewers participating in our Beer Camp Across America Tour.  There will be live music, food, and of course beers.  A host of which you can’t even get in this area… think Ninkasi, Cigar City, etc.

2:00 pm — The Knight Brothers (country/crossover)

Mt Airy Natives, Curtis, David, Danny and Dean are the Knight Brothers! Country, crossover rock with a Gospel undertone. The Knight Brothers have been entertaining people all over the East Coast with their life inspired songs and passionate vocals for many years. Their country-rock style is illuminated by harmonies that can only come from being brothers.

3:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Style Winner Announcement: Widmer Brothers‘ Wheat (Weiss, Weizen, Dunkelweizen)
  • First Place Style Prize: $500
3:00 pm — Drunk Naked Pirates (energetic rock-dance band)

Drunk Naked Pirates is a combination of four musicians from varying backgrounds of style and influences. Based out of the Washington DC tri-state area, DNP is an energetic rock band that offers a fresh live performance experience by professional musicians that raise the expectations in today’s entertainment industry. DNP offers a great entertaining show, performing music that ranges from the 60’s to the most current of songs.

3:00 pm — Brewer's $6K Homebrew Competition LIVE Judging: Best In Show

The first place beer from each style category will go on to the AHA/BJCP best in show grand prize judging which will be judged LIVE during Beer Bacon Music on Sunday, May 18th at 3pm. The first-place winner of the Brewer’s $6K will be awarded a $6,000 prize for placing best in show, and will receive full bragging rights as the winner of the world’s largest homebrew competition. Fame and fortune are sure to follow!
